Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. Spanish navigators took possession of Barbados in the late 15th century. Barbados is a developed and peaceful country with a very high quality of life. Barbados's population is predominantly of African descent. On 30 November 1966, Barbados became an independent state and Commonwealth realm with Elizabeth II as Queen of Barbados. Barbados is closely associated with the Caribbean and is ranked as one of its leading tourist destinations.
