Gabon, officially the Gabonese Republic, is a country on the west coast of Central Africa. Since its independence from France in 1960, the sovereign state of Gabon has had 3 presidents. Gabon has a bicameral legislature with a National Assembly and Senate. Gabon is a member of the United Nations. Gabon has an equatorial climate with a system of rainforests. Gabon has at least 40 ethnic groups

Gabon is divided into 9 provinces which are subdivided into 50 departments. The president appoints the provincial governors, the prefects, and the subprefects.
